Froots' Review

Froots' Review

First Impression

John: Remember Jared from Subway? He lost like 300 pounds because he ate Subway for ever meal, every day for the better part of three years. After that, Subway started touting their ‘health benefits’ and all of the sudden everyone and their Step Uncle started eating there. Well, after studying the health benefits of the Subway diet for about 30 minutes, I came to the conclusion that I think Jared could have lost twice as much weight if he had been eating at Froots. Yes, that means I think this place is twice as healthy. As soon as I walked in the door, I’m pretty sure that my cholesterol level went down and I lost three pounds. Froots has that kind of effect on you. No matter where you look, you’re going to see something healthy inside the store; whether that’s fruits, vegetables or shots of wheat grass.  If you don’t know what a wheat grass shot is, just know this: it’s a green looking liquid that will supply your body with a week’s worth of vegetables.

Copsey: I’ll be honest: the wheat grass shot was hard to swallow. It tasted like lawn clippings and didn’t smell much better. But I actually did feel very good walking out of Froots, which is something I can’t say happens often on these reviews. And the whole restaurant makes you feel happy and healthy. There’s fruit art on the walls and diet widgets on the counters. Being guys (lazy ones at that), John and I aren’t too familiar with this scene, but it’s addictive.

Appetizer

John: Froots really only does three things: salads, wraps and smoothies. Of those three, the smoothies intrigued me the most, so I ordered four of them. I’ll tell you about two of them in this section and I’ll talk about the other two in the dessert section. First I tried the Strawberry Zinger. This tastes exactly like fruit punch except it’s better and strawberrier (Strawberrier may not be a word, but who cares). Why is it better? Well, when I drink Snapple fruit punch or Hawaiian Punch, those two drinks aren’t made right in front of me with fresh fruit as the Zinger was. Like Subway, Froots benefits from the fact that everything is made right in front of you. Copsey and I also had the Peanut Butter Sensation. Quick disclaimer: I love peanut butter. I put it on cookies, bread, tacos and pancakes. If you also love peanut butter, you will love this drink. It’s like eating from a Jiff jar, only the drink also has a slight banana flavor that my Jiff didn’t have as a kid.

Copsey: Since we’re having all the Subway comparisons today, think of the shakes and smoothies as your Subway sub – made to order from things you can recognize and see behind the counter. The Zinger was so fresh I went right for it instead of the peanut butter shake. This smoothie had most fruits in it that I will actually eat (is strawberry-kiwi one fruit or two?) and orange sherbet and it actually tasted like the ingredients. How odd. And delicious.

Entrées

John: When I go out for lunch, I want something light, filling and tasty. I don’t leave work on my lunch break looking for a place that serves huge T-Bone steaks. I leave looking for a semi-healthy meal or snack. Well, I’ve got some good news for myself, Froots has this. We ordered three wraps (there are about 10 on the menu) and I really enjoyed two out of three of them. My favorite by far was the Kansas City. The roast beef based wrap was recommended by one of the employees and I loved it. It was filled with Monterey jack cheese, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, jalapenos and BBQ sauce. The only drawback to this wrap is that the BBQ sauce dripped – on to my shirt, which was white. I don’t own any bleach and like most guys, I know nothing about the washing machine. I’ll probably end up throwing the shirt away, but the wrap was so good, I’m not even bothered. We also tasted the Southwest and Jerk Chicken Wraps. I thought the Southwest was a little bland. However, if you like the spiciness and tartness that a jerk sauce offers, you’ll be a fan of the Jerk Chicken Wrap.

Copsey: I like to eat over a “plate,” sometimes using “utensils,” so I can’t complain about getting anything on my shirt., or about anything that we ate, really. Anyone who knows me knows that I’m not really a fan of “southwestern” food. So it should come as high praise when I say that the southwestern wrap was absolutely great. I liked it even better than the beef. This had grilled chicken chunks mixed with Monterey jack cheese, black beans corn and a host of fresh veggies. And unlike other wraps I’ve had where it’s either mostly meat or mostly wrap, this was mostly veggie. Add the sweet mayonnaise the chicken was covered in and you have a great lunch.

Dessert

John: If in the next few days you plan on making the 39-hour drive to Seattle, you may want to consider one, two, three or five of Froots’ Red Bull Smoothies. Copsey and I sampled one called the Mango Bull. Now I’ve never been a big fan of Red Bull by itself. I think it tastes too much like children’s liquid Tylenol. Not that I go around drinking children’s liquid Tylenol, but you get the point. Anyway, the combination of mango, pineapple juice and orange sherbet did just enough to mask the Red Bull taste. As a matter of fact, it made the drink rather tasty. So tasty that it was the first one of my four smoothies that I finished. We also tried the Tropical Toucan. Whenever I see the word Toucan, I think of Toucan Sam the Froot Loops bird. That’s actually fitting here because this smoothie tastes like Froot Loops smell. If for some odd reason you’ve never smelt Froot Loops, that’s a compliment.

Copsey: We were warned that some of the Red Bull drinks actually tasted like Red Bull, so we wisely chose the ones that masked the taste. We chose right, as John said. It was a tasty drink with enough kick to it to keep me from raiding the coffee pot later in the afternoon.

Final Impression

John: Froots really is the perfect lunch. Are you hungry? They have healthy, tasty food. Are you thirsty? They have smoothies. Are you looking to lose more weight than Jared from Subway? I’m pretty sure there are only a couple of things on the menu that have more than 10 grams of fat (Keep in mind that I am just guessing here, contrary to popular belief, I am not a food scientist). Copsey and I were in and out within 45 minutes which is perfect for when you’re at Kohl’s (in the same parking lot) and you’re losing energy thanks to intense shopping and you just need a quick pick-me-up. It’s also perfect for lunch. Oh and I think I’ll end by noting that there is a libido additive that can be put in your smoothie. I had them put extra.

Copsey: Way to keep the review classy, John. I think I’ll end it there.
