Southside Democrats have controlled the Fulton County Commission for so long that many Republicans in North Fulton have simply tuned out.

On January 17, four people showed up at a party they weren’t invited too and the night ended with all of them getting arrested. At 4 a.m., police dispatch received two calls, one saying that a victim had been shot and another call saying that the gunman had his gun wrestled away from him and that no one was shot. Authorities headed to the address of the party and met with Stephen Shook. Shook told police that Matthew Peterson, Phillip Carver, Rachel Batelaan and Lindey Kuhr came over uninvited. Shook also told police that Peterson was trying to steal beers by putting them in his pockets. Shook then said that he confronted Peterson about the stolen beers and that Peterson pulled a gun on him. Shook told police that some party goers wrestled Peterson to the ground and took his gun. After the incident, Peterson and his friends were kicked out of the party. At this point, officers received the call about someone getting shot. Police talked to Batelaan first and she told them that they were going to drop the victim off at Northside Hospital. However, police checked out the hospital and she wasn’t there. Batelaan then informed police that her and her friends were near Cox Road and Applecross Drive with the gunshot victim. When police neared that location, Batelaan changed her story and said she was on New Providence Road. After Milton police confirmed to Roswell police that Batelaan and her friends were not on New Providence, Peterson called the cops and said that they were now headed back to the hospital to drop off the gun shot victim. When pressed for his exact location, Peterson told police that he was at the Three Dollar Café in Sandy Springs. Officers asked him to stay there so they could send an ambulance for the victim. At that point, Peterson hung up his phone. Officers called the number back and Batelaan answered, she told the police that the victim was at Northside Hospital. Police eventually tracked the group to the Varsity in Alpharetta. The group then told police that no one had actually been shot. When questioned by authorities, Batelaan gave the police a false name. Officers also noted that Batelaan and Kuhr ingested some xanax behind one of the officers vehicles. Batelaan was arrested and charged with possession of a schedule IV narcotic, obstruction, false report of a crime , giving a false name to authorities and minor in possession of alcohol. Peterson was arrested and charged with false report of a crime and simple assault. Kuhr was arrested for possession of schedule IV narcotics and Carver was charged with minor in possession of alcohol.

Georgia Tech Cost Auburn the National Championship?

On January 13 while on patrol at Montana’s Bar and Grill, an officer noticed two men fighting in the parking lot. The two men were rolling around on the ground attempting to beat each other up. The officer then approached the two men and asked them to stop fighting. The two men, identified as David Otter and Daniel Quirke, obliged the officer’s request. At that point, the officer asked the men why they had been fighting. The two combatants both agreed that a argument over college football led to the fight. According to the report, the fight began when one of the men believed that Auburn would have made the National Championship game if they had played Georgia Tech. Otter, an Auburn fan, got upset during the argument and a pushing and shoving match ensued with Quirke, a Georgia Tech fan. Both men admitted to being drunk during the fight. The officers arrested both Quirke and Otter for disorderly conduct.

Milton Police Nab Several Suspects

David Hughes

On January 9, a 15-year-old boy was at home and upstairs in his room when he heard someone downstairs talking on the phone. The man, identified as David Hughes, was familiar to the boy, but the boy knew that Hughes had no reason for being in the house, so the boy called his mother. The mom hurried home, but by the time she arrived, Hughes was already gone. Just over two hours later, while the mom was home, Hughes tried to enter the house again, this time through a door in the kitchen. However, before authorities could get involved, Hughes fled the scene. Later, it was discovered why Hughes had been in the house. The former friend of the family had stolen some blank checks from the victims. Hughes eventually wrote one of the checks out to himself and cashed it in downtown Atlanta. Six days after the break in, police arrested David Hughes. Hughes is now sitting in the Fulton County Jail facing charges of burglary and forgery.

Joshua Burdett

On January 15, police apprehended a second forgery suspect wanted out of Milton. According to authorities, Joshua Burdett took checks from his mom, wrote them out to himself, forged her signature and then cashed the checks. Burdett is believed to have stolen over $1,000 from his mother. However, Burdett wasn’t arrested for forgery. Roswell police nabbed him on January 15 for possession of marijuana and possession of drug related objects. When the RPD ran Burdett’s name through their system, they found that the 17-year-old was also wanted for forgery out of Milton. Burdett isn’t currently being held in the Fulton County Jail on the drug and forgery charges plus one charge of obstructing and officer.
