Tune into WGKA Radio 920 AM today at 9 AM for a great show on North Fulton politics. My guests are noted political consultant Randy Whatley, who runs the Roswell Tolleson for Mayor campaign and Ga. House Rep. and GOP gubernatorial candidate Austin Scott, from Tifton. I have never been to Tifton, so we can find out where it is, and where Rep. Scott is in his race. He is fresh off his 1,000 walk through Georgia. But he assured me he is driving to our Buckhead studio, lest he be late for the live broadcast.
GEORGIA DEMS LAUNCH WEBSITE
The Democratic Party of Georgia has launched a new Web site that it says explores misconduct by state Republicans. By the looks of things, they better buy extra bandwidth just for the Deal for Governor campaign alone.
The site, just launched, asks, “Who do they represent?’’ and declares “Georgia Republicans are looking out for number one.’’
I hope that number one means average folks.
Democrats say the site targets “several recently exposed cases of corruption, graft, and backroom dealing from influential Georgia Republicans.’’
The site claims to give voters “key facts’’ about what special interests are giving money to U.S. Rep. Nathan Deal, former state Rep. Eric Johnson and state Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine – all Republican candidates for governor – and Republican U.S. senators Johnny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss.
But they make no mention of Roy Barnes or the State House Dems that haven’t paid their income taxes.
Good thing The Beacon is around to provide a balanced political perspective, right?
VOTH GETS A LITTLE FEISTY
Roswell council candidate and political newcomer Craig Voth decided to take the kid gloves off this week in his uphill battle against Betty Price. Voth started out the week by telling me this tidbit, and suggested I share it with our readers as sort of a public notice.
“On Monday, October 20th a sign bandit was on the loose in Roswell. Political signs that had been placed on private property were either stolen or damaged.
Not all Candidates or their supporters for this upcoming election need to be alarmed. This bandit only seems to be interested in bright red and black signs with the name VOTH on them. The bandit even removed the sign from my yard and others in the neighborhood. If you are aware of any VOTH signs that are missing please feel free to notify me. The bandit is described by some witnesses as an “Uncomely woman in her 60’s.” Please be on the lookout, be safe, but don’t worry… because we don’t think she bites.”
I’ve been on the case, but I don’t know any “uncomely women in their ‘60’s” that fit Voth’s description. So I drove down to “Johnny’s Hideaway” in Buckhead on Tuesday night, and paid a visit to “cougar land.” It was called “Cougar Night.” After one beer I started checking out the back seats of cars in the parking lot for Voth signs. It seemed like everyone in the place fit the Voth description.
Then Voth came right back at Tuesday’s League of Women Voters Candidate’s Forum at Roswell city hall and questioned Price’s motivation for the local race. He took a page out of former Texas Sen. Lloyd Bentsen’s book of political lore in his VP debate with then Indiana Sen. Dan Quayle: This is paraphrase of what he said: I know Tom Price. Tom Price is a friend of mine. But Betty, you’re no Tom Price.
Did it work? One voter called to tell me Voth knocked on his door to get his vote. “Yeah, why not?” the voter asked. “Tom needs her in D.C. anyway…”
IS TOLLESON’S EAST ROSWELL CARTEL CRACKING UP?
We have to believe that Lori Henry has to be driving the “Tolleson East of The Highway Political Cartel” nuts. Her pesky supporters are penetrating their base and we hear they are picking up support steadily. We crashed an East Side Henry Meet and Greet on Wednesday night on the East side. We had to sneak in, because we have no badges, invites or donations. But I disguised myself as Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker, because he don’t need no stinkin’ badges –or elections. The ploy worked. Henry had about 40 people gathered and made a very good speech. We hear she raked in $500 to boot, so we went by her house the next morning to pick up the balance she owed for the full page ad on this edition’s back cover, before her campaign blew it on something frivolous, like postage.
Henry volunteers told us that campaign guru Paul Kaplan drives them nuts. We told them not to worry, he drove us nuts too when he was senior editor at The Beacon. My editorial staff is privately praying for a run-off. “That keeps him out of our hair at least another month,” one said, with hope ringing eternal in his voice.
TOLLESON’S GOT THE CHICKS
The Tolleson camp sent out a great direct mail piece that hit my house on Tuesday. The header read: “Women Leaders of Roswell Endorse David Tolleson.” It had a picture of nine notable Roswell women on the cover. Naturally, I brought it to the office, and wouldn’t you know it –guys being guys- my male rogue staff went in the sports department and ranked the Tolleson chick supporters in the photo, like Sports Illustrated does. We can’t share the full results, but we can tell you that former Roswell Councilwoman Catherine Hibbard got the most votes - by a huge landslide. My sports editor wanted to know why she isn’t on the ballot. FYI, Paula Winiski was second…but I secretly voted for her twice.
