GOP House Members Say "No" to McConnell Plan (07.25.11)

Broun, 86 House members fire off letter to GOP leadership harpooning Mitch McConnell's proposal

WASHINGTON -- Congressman Paul Broun, M.D. (GA-10) signed a letter to the Republican House Leadership urging them to both publicly oppose Senator Mitch McConnell's plan to raise the debt ceiling and ensure that it never comes to the House floor for a vote.

"It is extremely critical for the federal government to immediately cut spending and start paying down its debt,” said Broun [pictured below].

"Unfortunately, Senator McConnell's plan allows Members of Congress to sidestep their responsibility to the American people by giving the President nearly unilateral authority to raise our nation’s debt ceiling. I am adamantly opposed to this debt crisis compromise. 'Passing the buck’ is not an option," Broun said, in a statement. Earlier this month, Broun introduced unique legislation, H.R. 2409, the Debt Ceiling Reduction Act, that would lower the debt ceiling to $13 trillion. He voted against the cut, cap and balance bill last week, saying it cut little and didn't balance the budget in a short enough time period.
