EMORY JOHNS CREEK HOSPITAL EARNS QUALITY RESPIRATORY CARE RECOGNITION

Emory Johns Creek Hospital has earned Quality Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) under a national program aimed at helping patients and families make informed decisions about the quality of the respiratory care services available in hospitals.

About 700 hospitals or approximately 15% of hospitals in the United States have applied for and received the award.

The QRCR program was started by the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) in 2003 to help consumers identify those facilities using qualified respiratory therapists to provide respiratory care.  Hospitals earning the QRCR designation ensure patient safety by their adherence to a strict set of criteria governing their respiratory care services, including:

    * All respiratory therapists at EJCH are either legally recognized by the state as competent to provide respiratory care services or hold the CRT or RRT credential.

    * Respiratory therapists are available 24 hours a day.

    * Other personnel qualified to perform specific respiratory procedures and the amount of supervision required for personnel to carry out specific procedures is designated in writing.

    * A doctor of medicine is designated as medical director of respiratory care services.

The AARC’s QRCR program grew out of concerns among healthcare leaders and the general public regarding the safety and quality of healthcare services provided to patients.  Respiratory therapists are specially trained healthcare professionals who work under physician’s orders to provide a wide range of breathing treatments and other services to people with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer, AIDS and other lung or lung-related conditions. They also care for premature infants and are key members of lifesaving response teams charged with handling medical emergencies.

Emory Johns Creek Hospital, located in the heart of Johns Creek, is known for its state-of-the-art technology in a luxurious, hotel-like setting.  Services include emergency care, state-of-the-art all digital imaging including a 64 slice CT,  MRI,  The Birth Place with Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, 24-hour anesthesiologists, intensive care, advanced cardiac care, vascular medicine and surgery, rehabilitation services and women’s services.  Emory Johns Creek Hospital is home to the Atlanta Bariatric Center, designated a Center of Excellence by the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons.

AREA BOYS AND GIRLS RETURN FROM WEEKLONG LEGION LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

Alpharetta American Legion Post 201 and its Auxiliary Unit have again led the State of Georgia in the number of high school boys and girls it has sponsored to send to the respective Boys or Girls State Programs.

Boys State is a comprehensive one week course in state and local government. It is a “leadership action program” where qualified rising high school seniors are given the opportunity to develop a working knowledge of the structure of government. Along the way delegates develop a mythical 51st state, run by those delegates elected to serve in a host of offices.  Instruction is presented on the law, the court system, parliamentary procedure and Georgia political history.  In all, 28 boys were sponsored by Post 201, the second consecutive year the post has sponsored the largest contingent in the state.

Unit 201 of the American Legion Auxiliary sponsored 23 young women to the Girls State program. The purpose of Girls State is to teach young women the responsibility of citizenship and love of God and Country.  Participants in Girls State also learn how to participate in the functioning of government by taking on responsibilities of elected and appointed government officials.

BIKE BOXES AND SHARROWS INSTALLED IN ROSWELL

In an effort to improve operational safety of the Roswell road network for all users, the Roswell Transportation Department is launching two new safety initiatives – Bike Box and Sharrow (or Share the Road Arrow.) Installation is currently underway for these features.   There is a growing national trend to mark roadways in certain situations to provide more positive guidance to both vehicles and bicycles. This is especially important in areas where there is considerable bike traffic, but there are no bike faculties such as shoulders and bike lanes.     The Bike Box is designed to allow bikes to come forward at an intersection that shows a red signal. This increases visibility of the bikes for the vehicle drivers. This practice is used widely across the country and has proven to be an effective measure to prevent motor vehicle and bicycle accidents. The first installation of the bike box will be at Dogwood Road and Riverside Road intersection. The second safety feature is the Sharrow (or Share the Road Arrow.) This symbol is designed to explain to vehicle drivers how to “share” the pavement with bikes. This feature is positioned near the edge line to show that vehicles should expect bikes and that they should generally expect them to be on the right side of the lane. Sharrows are used in other cities including Athens, Georgia. Citizens should begin to see these markings around Roswell within the next few weeks.
