Federal authorities accuse a Florida man of using identities of prison inmates to create phony income tax documents and file for more than $630,000 in refunds.
Officials say 44-year-old Anthony Davila of Tampa is named in a 34-count federal indictment unsealed this week after his arrest in Florida. They say Davila, aided by an unidentified co-conspirator, operated the scheme in the Augusta area from Jan. 1, 2005, through Dec. 31, 2007 and obtained more than $423,000 in refunds after filing over 120 false income tax returns. The Internal Revenue Service blocked some claims.
Davila is accused of conspiracy, filing false income tax claims, mail fraud, and aggravated identity theft. No court hearings have been set in Augusta, where the case will be heard.
