H.S. Basketball Showdown Saturday Results

Last night was Showdown Saturday in North Fulton. Unfortunately the Beacon goes to press Saturday afternoon, so the following results did not make it in our Feb. 7 edition.

Below is a list of final scores and the potential ramifications for next week's region tournaments:

Boys

No. 2 Centennial 77-55 over no. 5 Milton

The Knights got revenge for their Tuesday loss. Devonta White led the way for Centennial with 23 points, teammate Adrian Rogers had 17.

Region Ramifications: Barring an upset this week, Centennial has now clinched the no. 1 seed in next week's region tournament. The Knights will only have to beat Lassiter, Pope, Kell, Alpharetta or Roswell to qualify for the state tournament. On the other hand, Milton will be in hot water. The Eagles will either have to knock off Walton or Campbell to qualify for the state tournament. If they end up playing Campbell, it will be a hostile environment as the Region tournament is being played at Campbell this season. Campbell has beaten both Walton and Wheeler this season.

AA no. 1 Greater Atlanta Christian 70-52 over Blessed Trinity

The Titans were only trailing by six at the half, but they were unable to keep up with the state's top ranked team in the second half.

Region Ramifications: If BT can go 2-0 this week, they'll clinch a no. 2 seed in the region tournament.

Girls basketball

Alpharetta 40-37 over Roswell

Roswell did everything right; they held Alpharetta's freshman sensation Kylee Smith to six points and sophomore star Delaney Hollenbeck to zero. Smith averages over 20 points per game. However, the Hornet's didn't account for Alpharetta's Lauren Brown. Brown scored 24 in the game and hit a 3-pointer with 18 seconds left to break a 37-37 tie.

Region Ramifications: Alpharetta has now clinched the no. 2 seed in the Region tournament. The Lady Raiders have never qualified for the state tournament. It will only take one win in next week's region tournament to qualify for the big dance.

No. 4 Norcross 61-44 over Chattahoochee

The Lady Cougars were finally cooled off. Going up against the the top team in region 7-AAAAAA, Chattahoochee never got comfortable.

Region ramifications: The Lady Cougars are virtually assured of the no. 3 seed in the Region 7-AAAAA tournament next week. This means they will only need one win to qualify for state.
