While working in conjunction with Milton High School PTSA, advocating on behalf of all students as per the National PTA’s missions and purposes, last week the Milton High School administration approved the integration of the book, “Ignorance is No Defense: A Teenager’s Guide to Georgia Law,” into health classes.  The inclusion of this information in the curriculum has been a joint effort between the Chattahoochee High School PTSA, led by Debbie Roth, Co-President, and the Milton High School PTSA, led by Nita Stallard Funk, Chair of Drug and Alcohol Awareness.

The first approved class will be taught at Milton High beginning second semester 2010.  The same program began at Chattahoochee High last year in second semester 2009.  This week Milton High School PTSA donated 35 copies of this book to the Milton High School Health Department to be used as a supplemental resource to the health curriculum.  Now Georgia laws affecting teens and their related consequences will be studied alongside subjects such as drinking, driving, and drugs. Many sections from Mr. Morgan’s book correlate substantially and are in alignment with the Georgia Performance Standards.  The goal is to have all Milton health classes integrate the same program beginning first semester of the fall 2010/2011 school year.

The author of the book, former DeKalb County District Attorney, J.Tom Morgan, addressed the juniors and seniors at Chattahoochee High School recently about Georgia laws affecting teens and is scheduled to speak to students and parents at Milton High School on February 24, 2010.  Through the presentations, many parents and teenagers are surprised they are not aware of Georgia laws that can affect teens and their families in sometimes devastating situations.
