Newton Tea Party Leader's Convention Perspective
I will try to give an accounting of the events from my view point of the things that took place in Macon on Saturday at the GOP convention to elect the leaders of the party for the coming 2 years.
I will try to give an accounting of the events from my view point of the things that took place in Macon on Saturday at the GOP convention to elect the leaders of the party for the coming two years.
Before I describe the events I would like to say that the Tea Party does not agree with or support all of the past Republican acts -- we simply have more in common with the Republicans than we do Democrats and we stand a better chance of reforming the Republicans. We have got a lot of work ahead to bring the country back to Constitutional principles and the old Republican guard will not go quietly or without a fight. We need to recruit Young Conservatives. If you know of a person send them our way.
Thursday May 12th the early group arrived to begin planning and preparation. Friday the pre-business and meetings began to take place along with festivities for those who wished to attend. Saturday was the day that the bulk of delegates arrived in preparation to elect the new leaders for the next two years.
These people must pay there own way. I went on the cheap and it still cost me about $120 for the event and traveling expenses. If it had been further away I would have had to get a hotel for another $120. We had about 2,100 attendees plus those I could not account for. The conversation at church this week was, "I am sick and tired of all the parties because they do nothing!" But these people will not get involved.

I arrived early at 7:00 a.m. so I could study the lay out, breakfast was being served in honor of the Governor (you had to pay of course) but I had breakfast at the Waffle House. I talked with several in attendance and the general feeling I got was that they were Tea Party people and they had hopes for electing real Conservative candidates.
Meetings began at 10:00 a.m. with speeches (too many) and then voting began. The OIC (officer in charge) did a good job but it was difficult and at times contentious among some counties. The key- note speaker was HERMAN CAIN and this was a good kick off for the program. We began with secret ballots but we soon realized this would take forever and so we voted to count the ballots by standing and as you might suppose some disagreed with this. We did get bathroom breaks and no one made provisions for lunch of any kind and this could have been a problem -- some people have medical problems.
The meeting was over at about 4:00 p.m. and we had elected the following:
Chairman re-elected- SUE EVERHART
1st Vice Chair -BERT GUY
2nd Vice Chair -B J VAN GUNDY
Ist Asst Secretary -DEBBIE McCORD
The process was much to long for just four elections, too much pomp and not enough attention was paid to the delegates' needs.
