Our digestive system is amazing -- comprising several organs from the mouth to the rectum which allow us to digest and absorb nutrients and eliminate waste. In my practice, I see a large number of disorders related to digestive health.
More Americans are afflicted with digestive disorders than the combined total of these suffering from heart disease, AIDS, and cancer, according to Pillars of G.I. Health, a holistic program by Orthomolecular Products. The integrity of the gastrointestinal system is greatly affected by our lifestyle choices, particularly our diets.
Much of the food we eat is poor in nutrient value and high in toxins like pesticides, herbicides, preservatives and hormones. Sometimes even our healthful choices may be harmful to us. This is because we may have a food allergy or sensitivity.
There are other things we ingest which may be harmful -- pathogenic organisms. These are bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites which may be carried on raw or improperly cooked foods.
You are probably aware of the term detox but may have confusion over how this is accomplished. Detoxification helps the liver and intestines reduce the toxic burden and remove parasites, pathogenic bacteria and yeast. To simplify the process, I recommend to my patients a simple week-long detox program which is easy to follow. It effectively eliminates offending foods, cleanses the lower tract and stimulates the liver to remove toxins. After completing this program, patients feel lighter, rejuvenated and energized. It is a great kick start for weight loss.
The detox begins with a modified fast for two days. You consume specialty foods and supplements which enhance detoxification while eliminating incoming toxins and allergens. There’s a twice daily specialty shake and a rule to drink only water that’s been purified. (See my previous articles regarding the healthiest water filters). Organic fruits and vegetables are added on the third day. Essential vitamins and minerals are provided through a specialty supplement. The liver is detoxified through herbals which have been used for this purpose for centuries. Occasionally further GI repair is needed and a longer 14-day or 28-day detox is recommended.
In my previous traditional medicine practice, I was unaware of the burden imposed upon our liver by the pharmaceuticals, both prescription and over the counter, which many of us take. Add to this the daily toxin burden of nonorganic farming practices, hormonal additives to our meats and dairy and the dangerous chemicals leached from plastics into our bottled drinks, and you can imagine the potential of better health through periodic cleansing. Consider a spring cleaning of your precious liver and GI tract.
