Basketball Picks? That's Right, Basketball Picks.

Believe it or not, the three most common questions I get asked are:

John, what’s your favorite episode of Jersey Shore?

Do you like raisins?

You make football picks during the football season, so why in the name of James Naismith don’t you make basketball picks.

The answers: season one, episode three. I love raisins and as of today, you’re going to get basketball picks. That’s right, basketball picks. Here’s how this is going to work: I’m going to make picks in the two or three biggest games of the week. All the games I make picks in will be games played during the upcoming week (which is the week of Jan. 16). I might pick all girls games, I might  pick all boys games, but more likely, I’ll pick a mixture of both.

So lets get this started. I’m going to start this basketball picks thing slowly, so for week one, you only get two picks.

Johns Creek at Chattahoochee (Boys): Johns Creek just might be the best 5-8 team in Georgia. Five of the Gladiators eight losses have been by six points or less, including a 6-point loss to class A No. 3 Wesleyan and a 3-point loss to AAAA No. 2 Sequoyah. Oh and did I mention that they also lost by four to this very Hooch team, who just happens to be No. 7 in the state. I think what I’m trying to say here is that Johns Creek is going to lose, but it’s going to be close. I’ll say Kevin Duran...ahem, I?mean Jaron Blossomgame scores 31 for Hooch and the Cougars pull it out 64-58.

Wesleyan at Mt. Pisgah:  If you don’t follow Wesleyan, then you might not know that they’re awesome at all sports. I’m pretty sure their athletic programs win somewhere between 19 and 37 state titles a year. If Mt. Pisgah wants to make a statement, they can make one Tuesday when they host the Wolves. Wesleyan is No. 3 in the state, a win over the Wolves would without a doubt be the biggest win in Patriot history. Patriots, I really want to pick you, but Wesleyan sent me a nice tin of popcorn, so I think I have to pick them. Wolves  71-64.

Milton Coaching Situation

If you skipped over page 43 of the sports section then you might have missed the article about Scott Walker resigning as Milton’s head coach. Well, here’s the deal, Scott Walker resigned as Milton’s head football coach.

The first obvious question is: was he forced out? I don’t think he was. The Milton football program hasn’t exactly been successful in its 60-year history. Walker found some success at the school, including a playoff berth, which at Milton is as rare as a seeing a dinosaur in your front yard. Walker also put together the school’s first back-to-back winning seasons since 1994. I think he left on his own terms and I think you’ll see him coaching somewhere, sometime down the road when his health gets a little better.

The second obvious question: who’s going to take over the Milton job? And to answer that question, I have two words for you: Tim McFarlin. McFarlin has had an interest in the Milton program for a couple of years now. If I had to put percentages on it, they would look like this:

Chances of McFarlin getting hired: 80 percent

Chances of anyone else getting hired: 19 percent.

Chances of me getting hired: 1 percent.

That’s right Milton AD Jamie Dixon, I’m throwing my hat in the ring. I just need to do a couple of small things to make this work, like become a teacher. If anyone knows someone who sells fake Georgia teaching certificates, please let me know ASAP.
