Centennial Outruns Wheeler in Dominating 32-0 Win
"Centennial finished with 411 yards of total offense on the night"
Rumblin Bumblin Stumblin Carlson Carty was hitting the truck stick all night long on Wheeler defenders. Thanks to a tremendous 238-yard effort from the Knights bull dozing running back, Centennial whipped the Wildcats 32-0 in their final tune-up before beginning region play this Friday.
The Knights were able to come out and dominate both sides of the ball to earn their second victory and even out their record to 2-2 on the season. Although the score was lopsided, the first two quarters of play gave no indication the game would end with Centennial 32 points on top.
The first half of this game wasn't a pretty sight for Knight's fans. Fumbles, flags, and missed field goals all hurt Centennial drives. Not one to mince words, Knight Coach Jeff Measor was pretty blunt with his assessment of the game's first two quarters, “It was one of the worst first halves I've seen in the four years I've [been here]."
As bad as they played, Centennial still did manage to end the first half up 5-0, a safety and a field goal were the only scores of the first half. The safety came when Wheeler fumbled the ball through the back of their own end zone on third and long. The Knights were able to move the ball but, missed their first two field goal attempts. On Centennial's third field goal attempt of the night, Measor switched kickers and sophomore Dylan Lu was able to knock the ball through the uprights from 26-yards out.
In the second half, Centennial came out and punched Wheeler in the nose.
The Knights came out of the locker room looking like a revamped and energized team. After Carty ran over several Wheeler players two carries in a row, Jimmy Meyer threw a beautiful 37-yard fading deep to Wade Francis. Then Carty capped off the drive with a pounding 1-yard touchdown. It was the first touchdown of the game for either team and the first of two touchdowns on the night for the senior.
Although the Centennial offense only played one solid half of football, the Knight defense put together four solid quarters. The unit pitched a shutout, playing an almost a perfect game. The defense even came up big on several fourth down plays and scooped up three fumbles on the night.
The Centennial shut down defense meant the Knight offense was on the field a lot, especially in the second half. Centennial was able to rack up four scores in the game's final two quarters, including one by defensive lineman-turned-fullback Jessie Burdick, who pounded the ball in for a score from 1-yard out.
On the Knights next possession, Meyer completed another terrific pass to Wade Francis who came down with ball covered by two defenders. The Knights sealed the victory with one more rushing score on the night, a 1-yard run by Zietrick Smith. Smith finished the game with 43 yards on 10 carries. Meyer was a perfect 4 for 4 through the air, throwing for 97 yards. Francis was on the receiving end of each one of Meyer's throws.
Centennial finished with 411 yards of total offense on the night.
Coach Measor seemed pleased with the win after the game as he shared victory hugs with several players. But he still had a couple of concerns, “I was proud of the way the players came out and battled in the second half. But, if we come out and play like we did in the first half in region play, we are going to lose.”
Knight fans shouldn't be to worried though, Centennial still has another week of practice to clean up their game before they open region play on Friday when they play host to West Forsyth (3-1).- Alpharetta High School Football will be hosting a youth football camp in memory of Sanders Marshall for grades 3-8.
