GHSA Set For Reclassification; Chattahoochee Could See Biggest Change

Don’t get comfortable with those rivalries just yet...

Thanks to the opening of three new high schools in North Fulton over the past seven years, the GHSA is projecting that Chattahoochee will not have enough students to play at the AAAAA level. Timmy Byerly (pictured above) and his Cougar teammates are most likely headed for class AAAA.

Don’t get comfortable with those rivalries just yet. On Wednesday, the GHSA will submit their bi-annual reclassification. Georgia’s high school governing body has to reclassify the schools every two years for two reasons: enrollments are always changing and new schools are always opening.

The GHSA has proven to have no rhyme or reason to their methods. During the 2004 and 2005 sports seasons, Roswell and Milton were lumped together with the likes of Cherokee and Woodstock, while Centennial was in the same region as Norcross, Peachtree Ridge and Collins Hill.

For the reclassification that encompassed the 2006 and 2007 sports seasons, the GHSA nailed it as far as North Fulton schools go. Roswell, Milton, Alpharetta, Centennial, Chattahoochee and Northview all ended up in the same region.

However, after 2007, both Chattahoochee and Northview got the boot to Region 7-AAAAA where they were matched up with mostly Gwinnett County schools.

Wednesday’s reclassification should be intriguing for Chattahoochee. Over the last decade, ‘Hooch has lost students to new schools like Alpharetta, Northview and Johns Creek. Due to the decline in their student population, Chattahoochee is now eligible to drop a level and play sports at the AAAA level. Chattahoochee has the option of petitioning to play at the AAAAA level, but sources at the school have told the Beacon that the Cougars plan to drop to AAAA. Chattahoochee could end up in the same region as Tucker or all-sport powerhouse Marist.

If Chattahoochee accepts the drop to AAAA, look for Northview to get lumped back with the other North Fulton schools. It’s not likely that the GHSA would leave one Fulton County school in a Gwinnett dominated region.

Brookwood High School is projected to have the largest enrollment in all of Georgia with over 3,400 students. Northview is projected to have the largest student body in North Fulton with 2,435 students. Milton is projected to be only about 10 students behind the Northview number.

The official GHSA reclassification will be released on Wednesday. Beaconcast.com will have the updated regions as soon as they are available.
