Herrick, Upchurch hit Major Milestones in Chattahoochee Win

If you look at the final score, you might not think that Chattahoochee's 70-29 win over Johns Creek on Friday was a memorable win for the Cougars.

If you look at the final score, you might not think that Chattahoochee's 70-29 win over Johns Creek on Friday was a memorable win for the Cougars. But its probably safe to say that Head Coach Eric Herrick and senior point guard Kayla Upchurch will remember the victory for awhile.

Upchurch scored 14 points in the game, including a second quarter layup that gave the senior a 1,000 points even in her Chattahoochee career. Upchurch would score six more to end the night at 1,006.

For Herrick, the 41-point win represented the 100th in his six-year career and it might have been the least stressful.

Thanks to seven first half 3-pointers (four from Courtney Froats and three from Kayla's sister Katie Upchurch), Chattahoochee was able to jump out to a 41- 21 halftime lead. Although the 20-points margin might not show it, the Lady Gladiators did put up a fight in the game's first seven minutes. Johns Creek's Gabby Gopie-Myers scored five first quarter points to help her team pull within 12-11 at the one-minute mark in the first quarter. After that, it was all Chattahoochee.

Froats, Alexis Alexander and the Upchurch sisters combined to score all 41 of the Lady Cougar's first half points.

Chattahoochee connected on an impressive 9-of-14 3-pointers in the game. "It's something we've really emphasized this year," Herrick said of his team's 3-point shooting. "We're shooting three's more than we ever have in practice."

Froats ended up with 16 points in the game, all of which were scored in the first half. Kayla Upchurch finished the night with 14 in the scoring department, while sister Katie ended the game with 12.  Alexander also reached double digits, scoring 15.

For Johns Creek, Gopie-Myer led the Lady Gladiators with 10 points, while teammate Allie Buchalski chipped in 9.

For Chattahoochee, it was their fifth straight win by 20 or more points and their ninth overall.

The Lady Cougars (6-0, 13-2), who are in first place in region 7-AAAA, will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Forsyth Central. They will play host to South Forsyth on Friday.

Johns Creek's next game will be on Tuesday when they play host to Lambert. All games are scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m.

Boys: First Quarter Outburst Sends Hooch Past Johns Creek

By the time Chattahoochee fans got comfortable in their seats Friday, the game was all but over. In the games first five minutes, the Cougars jumped out to a 16-2 lead and they never looked back en route to a dominating 63-35 win over Johns Creek.

Even Hooch coach Kacey Martin was impressed, "That was by the far the best we've come out of the gate in a game all year," Martin said of his team's first quarter. "We were jacked up the first time we played them (a 4-point Cougar win), but we didn't channel it the right way. We channeled it this time and we played with a lot of intensity."

Nadale Fowlks and Jaron Blossomgame – who scored his 1000th career point on Jan. 18 – started the rout when they combined to score 14 of Chattahoochee's first 16 points.

The points would have meant nothing though if not for the intense play of the Cougar defense. Chattahoochee limited Johns Creek to only four field goals in the first half.

"It definitely was [one of our best defensive efforts of the season]," Martin said after the game. "The guys have been talking about stepping it up on defense and tonight was a good step in the right direction, hopefully we can keep improving on that."

Offensively, the Cougars got a big night from Markus Terry. The sophomore scored 11 first half points which propelled him to a game high 17. Blossomgame was the only other Cougar to reach double digits, he finished his night with 12. The junior star also pulled down six boards to go along with three blocks. Fowlks ended his night with eight points.

For Johns Creek, Valiant Hed was the star of the game. The senior hit three of the Gladiators four first half buckets and finished the night with 11 points. Austin Biggs and Reynoldo Pol each added six to the Gladiator scoring cause.

Chattahochee (5-1, 13-2) will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Forsyth Central, they also have a makeup game Wednesday at Creekview.

Johns Creek also has a Wednesday makeup game, which will be at South Forsyth. The Gladiators also have games against Lambert and Forsyth Central next week.
