Lady Hornets Sting Milton With Second Half Comeback (Plus All Tuesday Night Scores)

After one week of no high school sports due to snowmageddon, basketball returned to North Fulton Tuesday with a heated Roswell-Milton girls rivalry game that also happened to match up two teams ranked in the state top 10.

In a showdown that lived up to the hype, No. 10 Roswell stormed back from a 9-point first half deficit to stun No. 3 Milton 48-43. Shanteona Keys scored 11 points in the second half to lead the Lady Hornets comeback. The Roswell senior had 17 total points in the game to lead all scorers.

With the No. 1 scoring defense in Region 6-AAAAA, its not often a team comes from nine down to beat Milton, but that's exactly what Roswell did. The Lady Hornets trailed 29-20 late in the second quarter, a basket by Lindsay Gibson would trim the lead to 29-22 just before the half.

Roswell head coach Lesley Broadwell thought the first half went as expected, "We knew it was going to be one of those grind it out games," Broadwell said after the game. "At halftime, I just told the girls that we were going to have to be tough and stay focused."

Keys must have listened to Broadwell's halftime speech because she came out on fire in the second half.

Keys scored 10 points during a 14-5 Roswell run that turned a 35-28 Milton lead into a 42-40 Roswell advantage. The Lady Hornets wouldn't trail the rest of the game. "Shanteona settled down and really hit some shots that we needed," Broadwell said of her senior. "Those are shots that she usually hits for us and she hit them tonight."

The Lady Hornets outscored Milton 16-6 in the fourth quarter.

After a week with no games and no practices, Broadwell thought it was great to get a win over a tough rival, "Coming off the layoff, this was a big win," the coach said before adding, "We still have a long way to go in the season, but it's nice to get one over here at their place."

Although the Lady Eagles came up short in the game, Nikki Dixon [Pictured], Geo Simms and Tori Waldner all reached double digits for Milton. Waldner led the team with 15, Simms scored 11 and Dixon added 13 before fouling out with 35 seconds left in the game.

For Roswell, Shelby Barker and Andreona Keys each added eight points to go along with Shanteona Keys' 17.

Milton (4-1, 9-3), who hasn't suffered consecutive losses since February 2008, will be back in action on Friday when they travel to West Forsyth.

Roswell (5-0, 11-4), who now holds sole possession of first place in Region 6, will travel to Northview on Friday. Both games tip off at 6 p.m.
