Live at Gwinnett Center for AAAAA State Championship: Milton vs. Westlake
I might have to sleep at the Gwinnett center tonight because there is no way that the boys championship game is starting on time. Norcross and Redan are in the middle of a barnburner. WIth 3:21 left, Norcross is up on Redan 58-56.
Anyway, lets get to this live blog. First, you won't get a prediction form Tim Altork tonight because he decided not to come. Something about watching old episodes of Matlock, not sure what's going on there. However, our photo guy Kent McCorkle braved the hurricane that is blowing over the city to be here tonight. McCorkle is to photography what Picasso is to painting.
8:30 p.m.: The girls AAAAA state championship is exciting, but it would be a lot more exciting if I had a snow cone. That's right, not one vendor in Gwinnett arena sells snow cones. One person suggested dippin' dots. No thanks, I want a snow cone.
8:44 p.m.: The 58-game Redan winning streak is about to come to an end in resounding fashion. Norcross is up 76-62, only 46 seconds until the Lady Blue Devils win the AAAAA girls state championship. I'll have to ask Norcross fans if the girls state title makes up for the controversial boys loss to Milton.
8:49 p.m.: Norcross girls just did a Lambeau leap into their student section after winning the state title with a 76-63 victory over Redan. Former Brave Brian Jordan is sitting in the front row with a huge smile on his face. His daughter Briana is the point guard for the 2010 state champs.
8:53 p.m.: Westlake has made their way to the court, one of their players tripped over a loose basketball, it wasn't pretty. Milton will be wearing white as they go for the school's first state basketball title. Looks like the game will tip off at about 9:10 p.m. I suppose that gives me time to go find a snow cone.
9:08 p.m.: For those of you interested in rankings, Westlake is no. 1 in the coach's poll, Milton is no. 2. We're going through introductions now. Minutes away from tip off.
9:20 p.m.: Hopefully Milton didn't think this is going to be like last night's 32-point win over Newton. At first time out, we have a run-and-gun game on our hands. Milton up 10-9, 3:17 left in first.
9:28 p.m.: Huge update here. Remember that Westlake guy that tripped over a basketball in warmups. It turns out that was their best player Marcus Thornton. Thornton is having trouble standing and was taken out after the game's first two minutes. Right now he is in the locker room being tended too. On a more exciting note, Milton is up 17-11 after one. Julian Royal is leading the way with seven points.
9:35 p.m.: We have a timeout on the floor. A loose ball just came my way, I tried to one hand it as I typed with my left hand, totally didn't work. Right now Milton is up 21-17 with 5:36 left in the first half, very intense game.
9:47 p.m.: The game is moving faster than I can think, that's why the updates are few and far between. Anyway, Westlake hits a layup at the buzzer to cut Milton's lead to 28-26 at the half. Julian Royal and Evan Nolte both have nine points. Nkosi Ali is leading the way for Westlake with nine points and four rebounds. All of Ali's points were scored in the second quarter. By the way, looks like Thornton might be done for the night, he wasn't on the bench the whole second quarter.
9:54 p.m.: Here's a little information on the guy Westlake lost. Marcus Thornton is rated the 27th best senior in the country by ESPN.com and the 34th best by Scout.com. The Lion senior is committed to Clemson.
10:03 p.m.: I think we're taking TV timeouts, because there's a stop in play, but neither team took a timeout. I don't know why it took me three quarters to figure that out. Anyway, Evan Nolte with a 3-ball and Milton is on top 33-28 with 4:34 left in the third.
10:12 p.m.: Westlake's Anthony Hopkinson called for an intentional foul after he almost breaks Evan Nolte's arms. Milton up 39-32, Westlake ball with 1:13 left in third.
10:15 p.m.: Milton ends the third quarter on an 11-4 run punctuated by a Dai Jon Parker 3-pointer with two seconds left. If Milton can defend a 44-34 lead for the final quarter, they'll be Georiga's newest AAAAA state champions. Nolte leading the team with 14, Royal has 13.
10:19 p.m.: Westlake turns it up a notch on defense, Milton coach David Boyd decides its time for a 30-second timeout. 46-37 Milton with 7:40 left.
10:21 p.m.: I'm starting to think people are purposely throwing the basketball at me, just had a rocket thrown my way, no one else on press row has been hit. Westlake takes a 60-second timeout, they're still down 46-37, but it's their ball.
10:26 p.m.: Westlake coach Darron Jackson just called another timeout. It looks like he is drawing up the old '11-point play,' if he's not doing that, he should be because Milton's up 50-39 with 5:22 left. Dai Jon Parker new Milton scoring leader with 16 points. Oh and Shannon Scott has four fouls.
10:33 p.m.: If Milton can make their free throws, I think we're going to have a new state champion. 52-41 with 1:40 left. Whoop, as soon as I say that, Jordan Loyd misses a free throw and Westlake turns around and hits a three. Milton now up 52-44 with 1:31 left.
10:37 p.m.: Dai Jon Parker dives on a loose ball and calls timeout. With 1:01 left Milton is up 54-44. I'm looking at the state championship trophy now and I think it would look nice in Milton's hallways.
10:41 p.m.: The Milton students know the trophy is heading to North Fulton. They're getting loud as Milton leads 55-46 with 14 seconds left.
10:43 p.m.: MILTON IS GEORGIA'S 2010 AAAAA BASKETBALL STATE CHAMPIONS. Final score: Milton 56, Westlake 46.
Dai Jon Parker scores 19 points in the win, Julian Royal has 15 and Evan Nolte puts up 14.
