Live in Carrollton for AAAAA Elite EIght: Milton Girls vs. Mill Creek and Milton Boys vs. Norcross

The number one email the Beacon gets every week always says the same thing: put John Breech in a live situation, give him a computer and see what happens.

Well today, your dreams come true North Fulton. I'm live in Carrollton for today's AAAAA State Quarterfinals. I'll be here for the 4 p.m. girls game (Milton vs. Mill Creek) and the 5:30 p.m. boys showdown (Milton vs. Norcross).

Now I know what you're thinking, shouldn't they just give the state title to whomever wins the Milton-Norcross game? Probably, but I'm not GHSA commissioner Ralph Swearingin, so I don't control those things.

3:30 p.m.: I just ran into Milton Athletic Director/head football coach Scott Walker. He just told me that the teams arrived in Carrollton last night and stayed at a plush hotel. Actually that's joke, plush hotels don't exist in Carrollton. Neither does anything else, the highlight of my trip so far was a brief stop at Food Lion. Anyway, since the players stayed in a hotel last night, they didn't have to deal with their parents badgering them for 24 hours, I think this could be a good thing.

3:44 p.m.: The Milton girls just took the floor to warm up. So far I've only counted one missed layup, I think this bodes well for the game.

4:01 p.m.: The announcer is a little crazy and he just introduced Milton, about to tip off.

4:15 p.m.: I don't have a stat guy next me, but I think Milton only missed one shot in the first quarter. Mill Creek can't stop Tori Waldner or Kris Puthoff-King (both have six points) and Nikki Dixon already has three assists. 16-10 Milton after first quarter.

4:21 p.m.: First time out of the game is called by Milton. Looks like Lady Eagle coach Craig Bennett wants to give his girls a pep talk. Milton up 20-12 with 5:31 left in second.

4:23 p.m.: That didn't take long. Second timeout of the game called by Mill Creek, Milton up 24-12 with 5 minutes left in first half.

4:31 p.m.: We've reached halftime here and Milton is now only two good quarters away from their first Final Four berth in school history. The Lady Eagles are leading Mill Creek 34-20 at the break. Not that I'm looking ahead, but it's very likely that if Milton wins, they will meet up with the almost unbeatable Redan Raiders. On my way to Carrollton, I did something I never do: research. The last time Redan lost was on March 7, 2008. That was in the AAAAA girls state championship.

4:35 p.m.: The Milton and Norcross boys teams have taken the floor as half time continues. If my prediction for this game is based on warmup gear alone, Milton is going to win by 20. The Eagles are wearing slick blue warmup pants with matching jacket, Norcross is wearing gray t-shirts.

Halftime Stats: Nikki Dixon leads the Lady Eagles with 12 points, Tori Waldner is right behind her with 10. Kris Puthoff-King and Erin Brundage both have six points. Oh and Rachelle Barnes looks like spider-man underneath the basket, Mill Creek can't get off a shot around her. She has three blocks, Waldner also has three.

4:53 p.m.: Mill Creek's Jac Weathers had decided to make this game remotely interesting. The Hawk senior has nailed two 3-pointers in the third quarter. Milton coach Craig Bennett just took a timeout with his team up 42-33. There smallest margin since the beginning of the second quarter.

4:56 p.m.: Tickets cost $10 to get in here at the University of West Georgia and now everyone is about to get there money's worth. Mill Creek closed the third quarter with a 12-4 run, Milton still on top 42-35.

5:05 p.m.: Milton is clinging to a 46-40 lead, Mill Creek's Moneshia Simmons might have to start paying rent to the free throw line because she practically lives there. She's been there 10 times today.

5:09 p.m.: Crowd here in Carrollton is multiplying by the second in anticipation of the boys game. Right now, there is 2:46 left in the fourth and Milton is still holding on to a six point lead, 51-45.

5:13 p.m.: They might want to cancel the boys game because there is no way it will be able to top this game in terms of excitement. With 1:04 left, Nikki Dixon is at the free throw line looking to cushion the Milton lead. Eagles are up 51-47.

5:16 p.m.: If you're a fan of the Office and Milton girls basketball, you're going to have to DVR the Office this week because the Lady Eagles are headed to the Final Four. They will play Thursday at the Gwinnett Arena against either the Bradwell Institue or Redan. My money says they'll play Redan. The game will tip off at 7 p.m. Now I need to go get a snack, hopefully I'll come back with some final statistics.

Stats from the Girls game: Nikki Dixon finishes with 25 points, four rebounds and four assists. Tori Waldner records 10 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Erin Brundage also scores 10 pivotal points in the game. Kris Puthoff-King had six points and seven assists.

5:45 p.m.: Norcross superstar Jeremy Lamb just missed the only wide open lay up that he has probably ever missed in his whole life, the ball slipped out of his hand as he went to lay it in. Milton up 12-8 with 1:46 left in first quarter.

5:49 p.m.: Shannon Scott and Dai Jon Parker each score 6 points in the first quarter, Milton up 14-10 after one.

5:54 p.m.: Dai Jon parker just went Magic Johnson on everyone and threw a ridiculous pass to Julian Royal underneath the basket. Royal hit the shot and was fouled. Milton up 21-15 with Royal's free throw pending.

6:01 p.m.: Halftime here at the game that I am pretending is the state championship even though it's only the state quarterfinal. Milton up 28-21. Norcross' Jeremy Lamb made a stumbling lay-in at the buzzer, but referee's waved it off. It was really close, like 'I would split the difference and give him one point for the shot' close. If Milton's plan was to shut down Lamb, who is headed to Connecticut next year, then their plan is working flawlessly. Lamb only has six points. If Ohio State basketball coach Thad Matta is watching this game at home, he is probably salivating at Shannon Scott's performance so far. Scott, who will be headed to OSU next season, has nine points and five rebounds. Dai Jon Parker has eight points which included a sick dunk with one minute to play in the second quarter. The unsung hero for Milton so far is Jordan Loyd, the junior has no points, but he does have five assists, a block and two rebounds. For Norcross, Malcolm McDonald is carrying the load with 13 of the Blue Devil's 21 points. Norcross has not led in the game.

6:17 p.m.: i'm not sure if it's in the Milton coach's handbook to call a timeout at the 5:30 mark of the third quarter, but David Boyd just called one as did Craig Bennett in the first game. Milton still on top 30-23.

6:23 p.m.: Dai Jon Parker is not even letting Jeremy Lamb breath oxygen, great defensive performance by Parker so far. Norcross timeout, Milton up 34-23 with 2:55 left in third.

6:30 p.m.: I've seen more action in a PG-rated romantic comedy than I saw in the third quarter of this game. Milton slows things down and outscores the Blue Devils 8-6 in the quarter. Milton up 36-27 going into fourth.

6:39 p.m.: Milton forced to take a timeout. The Eagles haven't scored in two and a half minutes and they've turned the ball over the last three times they've had it. Right now, it will be Norcross ball coming out of the timeout with Milton up 42-37 and 4:21 left in the game.

6:46 p.m.: Lamb nails two free throws, Norcross has their first lead of the game at 45-44 with 2:32 left.

6:49 p.m.: Timeout Norcross. Jordan Loyd knocked down a big bucket that got Milton's fans back in the game. Julian Royal just hit two free throws and with 1:39 let, it's Norcross ball with Milton up 48-45.

6:52 p.m.: WOW, this may be the most amazing game of the year. Norcross' Marty Johnson just hit a runner in the lane to give Blue Devils a 49-48 lead with 53 seconds left. It's MIlton ball. Prior to Johnson's shot, Shannon Scott and Dai Jon Parker both missed free throws.

6:54 p.m.: Dai Jon Parker just threw a pass out of bounds. Norcross ball and the Blue Devils are up 49-48 with 46 seconds left.

7:04 p.m.: Possibly the best finish to a high school basketball game in the history of this world. Down 51-50, Shannon Scott falls short on a three, then Milton misses two put backs as the final second ticks away. However, Milton's Julian Royal was fouled with no time left and given two free throws with :00 showing on the clock. Royal drained the first one and bounced in the second one to send Milton to the Final Four in the most stunning way possible. Video of Royal's free throws will be up tomorrow.
