Milton Basketball Star Julian Royal Taking His Talents to Georgia Tech

Maybe LeBron James should take some notes from Julian Royal.

Today in a press conference at Milton High School, the Eagle senior announced to the world that he will continue his basketball career at Georgia Tech. The press conference felt so much like James' "The Decision," that Milton head basketball coach David Boyd jokingly asked before hand if Jim Gray was in attendance.

With over 200 people packed into the Milton gymnasium, Royal stepped up to the podium, gave a brief speech and then put on a Georgia Tech hat, letting everyone in the gym know that he was going to be a Yellow Jacket.

Royal announced last week that he would either be attending Tech or UGA. Wake Forest was another option for Royal, but he eliminated the Demon Deacons earlier this month.

The 6-foot-9 power forward helped lead Milton to last season's AAAAA state championship and the Eagles are the early favorites to repeat this year.

Royal, who averaged 17 points and eight boards last season, was rated as the 58th best high school player in the country by ESPN.com. The senior finished the 2009-2010 season as the all-time leading points scorer in Milton history. With 1,602 total points, Royal passed Connor Nolte's 1,601 when he hit a fourth quarter bucket against Westlake in the state championship game. Connor Nolte, who ironically enough attends UGA, is the older brother of Royal's Milton teammate Evan Nolte.

"It feels pretty good to get this over with," Royal said of the recruiting process.

Asked when he officially decided on Georgia Tech, Royal said it was only hours earlier, "It was this morning. I woke up and just kind of knew [it was Georgia Tech]."

After deciding on Tech this morning, Royal told no one: Boyd, his parents, and even Yellow Jacket coach Paul Hewitt were all in the dark about where he was going to go.

Royal told reporters that one of the reasons he chose Tech was because of his friendship with freshman guard Mfon Udofia, formerly of Miller Grove High School.

The high-flying Milton senior is expected to officially sign with the Yellow Jackets on Nov. 10.

Royal is the third senior on the Milton basketball team to make a D-I commitment. Jordan Loyd has signed with Furman while Shannon Scott is set to attend Ohio State. A fourth teammate, Dai Jon Parker, is expected to announce a decision soon.
